I joined Roller Derby to get out of the house and find a hobby, but it turned into so much more. It has made me more confident in myself and pushed me past where I thought my breaking point was. I really enjoy working with all these strong, independent women. Oh each and it's a great was to get out some aggression!!
A few bruises here and there, nothing major..yet!!

I love that roller derby offers an automatic community of acceptance. Meeting people I never otherwise would have had the chance to know over the last 10 years has been incredible. Also, skating, I love roller skating.

Roller derby is the best workout! I have NEVER played a sports before this. Derby completely changed the way I treat my body - the way I exercise on and off skates, and how I eat. I fall down a million times every week, but I have never felt so great!
Bruised ego, occasional butt-hurt.
Occupation: I rule the world from my cube. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I have NO IDEA, but I keep coming back for more.
My only actual roller derby injury is a jammed finger. A hyperextended knee/subsequent surgery and broken wrist from other adventures kept me from playing though.
Occupation: Home Care Campanion
Its a unique sport, with a lot of opportunities for women.
Photography Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator
Year Started Derby: 2014
Occupation: USPS Mail Carrier
Skating has been in my blood for many years since my first job at a skating rink in high school. Why not join a Roller Derby team - skates, high-contact, adrenaline, girls? But the more you skate the more you learn Roller Derby is so much more. Its challenging your self to do things that in all aspects of sense and self-preservation are crazy. And its perfect! A girl hits your hard and you return the favor in kind. Someone out smarts you and you take note to not fall for that trick again. You get faster, quicker, and trickier on your feet. You are constantly growing and learning not just as a skater, but as a teammate, as a person, and as a friend.

The comradery, competiveness and the physical activity
Nothing directly related to derby. Had two knee scopes since starting and have a lot less meniscus then when I started!
Occupation: Digital Developer
I love the intensity of roller derby. It pushes your limits, emotionally and physically. My favorite part is "levelling up" even if it is small skills you master one at a time. Nailing a hip hit, owning a power jam, jumping the apex or even just soul crushing a jammer. When it clicks— and you make it happen it feels good, really really good.
When ICT plays and WE make it happen as a team, that also feels really really good.
Sponsorship Committee Head
I love paying a sport that makes you push your body more than you thought you could! I also love how derby brings so many different types of people together, and anyone can play!

The hits, the bruises, and the friendships
I love the camaraderie of our league working in an entirely DIY environment building on our own, and each other's, strengths to set and accomplish our goals season after season. Also, the hitting, obvs.
Broken ankle, torn PCL, broken tailbone
Occupation: Fashion, Interiors, Couture: Designer, Decorator, Seamstress & Fit Expert Extraordinaire
Skating. I think the skating is completely addictive and that feeling is what got me hooked initially. The endorphin high you get from so much speed and calorie burn is fantastic! Also, I love how the game is continually challenging, no one in the sport is an expert, there are always new ways to learn and adapt and have something unexpected from your opponents or team mates! I love that it brings people together for something healthy, active, and fun and creates family and community all over the world.
Injuries survived: messed up knee/PCL & hip/piriformis injury. Never have I torn or broke anything in the game or practice of derby (tore my meniscus in a running injury during my third season and had to have knee repair surgery and sit out for a bit) but I have injured my muscles through repeated abuse or overuse of the muscle and have gone through lots of physical therapy and even Chiropractic treatment to help muscles heal or strengthen them after abuse or overuse during games or practice.
Occupation: Cashier at Sprouts
It keeps me active and gives me motivation to get out of bed in the morning. Also, roller skating is cool and the people in the scene are even cooler.

The most rewarding thing about roller derby is just how empowering it is.
It’s a good way to stay in shape, is incredibly fun, and has some of the nicest, sweetest, most awesome girls/friends I have met.
I fell/sat on a skate wheel once. I had a bruise in the perfect shape of a wheel. That was fun.
Occupation: Crisis Counselor
Besides being a part of such an inclusive feminist sport- I love the challenge that roller derby gives me, both physically and mentally. It forces me to really be mindful of where I am in the present moment. It's basically the best self-care ever!
Just a few bruises, so far!
