What made you want join to roller derby?
Like many others, I joined when I was going through a trying time in my life. I always had an interest in the sport, but was too afraid of its various challenges. At that time in my life, I needed something outside of myself to spend time and energy on. Since I already enjoyed recreational skating, it seemed like the right time.

What is the most challenging thing about roller derby?
Sometimes it’s hard to keep in mind that we are each in our own derby journey, and that it’s necessary to make mistakes in order to mature and improve. The physical challenges are ever-present, but become easier if the mental and emotional challenges are met with courage.

My good friend Janel “Shuggie Shevelle” helped get my foot in the door. I am a strong girl, I like to play aggressively and play rough, and throw my weight around, this is everything I ever wanted. I get to be a GIRL, be strong, have fun, and get exercise. Win win win win win!

For me personally I have trouble learning “plays”. It took me 6 years to learn what offense and defense mean, I would say “tell me either ‘help’ or ‘kill’, I understand that!”

What is the most rewarding thing about roller derby?
So many things… I love the SUCCESS- the success of our newbies learning new things, watching their eyes light up and seeing the love of derby fill their souls. The success of our entire team coming together, trusting each other, working hard for each other, and all the love. The success of my personal journey, pushing myself to the limit, always, trying to get better, and seeing the results of that hard work.
Roller derby changes everything. It makes life better.

What made you want join to roller derby?
It was a magic combination of things. I was between things in life and had some time on my hands. I had recently seen the movie “Whip it” and could relate. I loved skating when I was a kid. When a recruitment flyer popped up on my Facebook, it was the right time and right place for me. It was meant to be…Those things made me join, but my teammate at ICT Roller Girls made me stay.

What is the most challenging thing about roller derby?
Surviving the first 6 months. I cried a lot, and left practice angry. I couldn’t skate fast enough, I was clumsy learning new skills, and I really didn’t even want to play. But I loved skating so I kept coming back. Every season I set a ‘challenge’ for myself in derby. Last year, the challenge was to sign up for every single roster and not back down even if I was nervous or it was a hard game, or get upset that I was not the best person on the roster. This season I have challenged myself to become a ref and NSO, which is intimidating!

What is the most rewarding thing about roller derby?
Coaching new skaters and our juniors team is the best. I can relate to the ‘deer in headlights’ feeling of being new, but watching it all click for a new skater melts my cold heart.
